Getting Things Done – The Art of Stress-Free Productivity
by: David Allen
The problem is universal: Knowing what has to be done in life is one thing, but actually moving forward with it can be a big challenge. This is especially true for busy professionals who have never-ending task lists or large, long-term projects.
David Allen provides a complete system to help get important tasks done. The
process itself, affectionately referred to as “GTD” by loyal followers, is one of the most useful productivity tools ever devised.
Looking at a mile long task or large project list can be overwhelming and cause one to simply not do anything at all. In this book, Allen explains how to break apart projects and take goals and tasks down into doable single items, one action at a time.
An extremely concise and simplified explanation of the GTD process, the strategy is comprised of a few key items: The Project List, The Someday/Maybe List, and the Next Actions list. Integrated into these key items is: Inbox, Outbox and File Cabinet management.
While all of these components are integral and useful parts of the entire system, the Next Actions list is where the majority of your productivity takes place. In short, a Next Action is the very next thing you need to do in order to move something forward.
Instead of looking at a project and wondering how you’ll ever be able to
handle it, you simply break off small chunks- the very next most important task that has to be done- and focus on that chunk by itself. Once that chunk is completed, you then break off another- the next thing that has to be done and so on.
I won’t try to explain all of the intricacies — David Allen does that in
250 pages with this book– but be assured Allen’s system is extremely useful and easy to learn.
You can start reaping the rewards of “Getting Things Done” before you’ve finished the book. It’s a handy reference to keep on the library shelf for further consultation in refining and customizing an enhanced productivity system.
“Getting Things Done” works for busy people today- busy trying to juggle business, family and personal life all at once, and sometimes the most important tasks don’t get prioritized and completed. This book teaches how to do just that: get things done.
A practical, informative book with excellent examples- this system is highly recommended.
